ANTIGUA ...and Barbuda is an island nation located in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. Antigua and Barbuda are part of the Lesser Antilles with the island of Guadeloupe to the south, Montserrat to the southwest, Saint Kitts and Nevis to the west and Saint Bartholemy to the northwest. |
St John's is the capital city of the nation. With a population of approximately 22 000 (1991 est.), St John's is the commercial centre of the nation and the chief port of the island of Antigua. The settlement of St John's has been the administrative centre of Antigua and Barbuda since the islands were first colonised in 1632, and it became the seat of government when the nation achieved independence in 1981. Most of the population are descendants of the slaves that once worked in the sugar plantations, but there are also groups of Europeans, notably British and Portuguese. The official language is English, though most of the locals speak patois, a mixture of English, local languages and some other European languages. Tourism
continues to dominate the economy, accounting for more than half of GDP.
The dual-island nation's agricultural production is focused on the domestic
market and constrained by a limited water supply and a labour shortage
stemming from the lure of higher wages in tourism and construction work. St John's tourist activity is mostly centered in the harbourfront complexes located in Heritage Quay. Cruise ship passengers rave about this shopping area and the more picturesque Redcliffe Quay. Many shops, restaurants and galleries are found in reconditioned stone structures and wooden huts.
